Cognitive Time Management

Although many professionals are well-versed in time management tools, productivity problems continue to persist in the workplace: deadline fatigue; reactive environments marked by constant crises, urgencies, and last-minute demands; and team members losing sight of shared priorities. This is because most time management training pays little attention to the cognitive (internal) and relational (external) factors that impact productivity. To be effective in managing time, we must account for how our brains process, perceive, and regulate time internally. We also need to be adept at aligning personal capacity with team dependencies and managing workflows with co-workers. Our Cognitive Time Management class teaches you to master time in ways that balance these considerations.

Our Philosophy

We rebuild time management around three realities most courses overlook: our personal life as a genuine cognitive input, our plans built with awareness of the people around us, and our focus and energy as variables in effective time management.

  • Futility of Willpower

A well-designed structure for managing your time outperforms willpower.

  • Time Is Relational

Effective time management must account for your co-workers' capacity, priorities, and performance.

  • Bio-Rhythms

Our energy varies across a day's activities, and the best plan must align with it.

  • Layered Horizons

Long-term plans, weekly rhythms, and daily tasks all needs their own but integrated structure.

Why Time Management Techniques Fail

Most time management is taught as a technical exercise, detached from the reality of work life. Our personal life is often shoved away to a separate calendar. However, rough mornings with a newborn, a commitment to evening courses, or simply being under-rested can affect the quality of our work. Our planning must not exclude the real version of us. Planning effectively also means planning with awareness of the daily reality of the people our work depends on: vacations, other workloads, and motivations. Effective time management does not assume every hour of your day is interchangeable and extends this awareness to your co-workers and stakeholders, whose energy and focus affect your plans just as much as your own.

Course Modules

Mastering Cognitive Time Management

Time Management Architecture

The first module introduces participants to constructing a roadmap, designing a weekly time block, and prioritising a daily task plan that accounts for their energy levels and their co-workers' capacity.

The Efficiency Toolkit

Participants will be introduced to classic tools for prioritising tasks and learn how to apply these tools in a roadmap, a weekly time block, or a daily task list.

Enhancing Focus

Participants will receive a practical grounding in how focus actually works: the mechanics, the external factors, two journaling techniques, and mental rehearsal for managing distraction, clutter, and enhancing grit.

The Science of Decision Making

Participants will discover how cognition shapes decision-making and how their own cognitive makeup influences their relationship with focus and time.

Practicals

Individual and group participants will work through constructing a road map, weekly time block, and daily tasks plan, applying the concepts they have learned.

Our cognitive time management training for a start-up yields more accurate forecasting of resource needs and reduces "taskless" time among workers.

Research on chronotypes shows that analytical thinking, memory, and decision-making all perform best when tasks are scheduled to match a person's natural energy rhythm.
